Does Drinking Green Tea Causes Acne?
Green tea is rich in nutrients and antioxidants. It is one of the best sources of refreshment and energy. However, everybody is different from one another, so the effects green tea may have on a body cannot be the same for everyone. Acne is annoying, and no one wants it. So, it can be worrisome to know that a drink that has so many benefits can lead to acne. But does green tea really cause acne, or is it just a myth? Let’s look deeper into it.
#1 One possible reason for green tea leading to acne is that it consists of caffeine. Caffeine plays a part in increasing the production of a stress hormone, known as cortisol secretion. It tends to increase the quantity of the oil that is being produced by the sebaceous glands. This factor can result in acne.
#2 However, there are very slim chances of green tea leading to acne. In fact, green tea is known to heal acne and is even used in some beauty hacks. The reason behind this is that green tea consists of EGCG, which has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. As we all know it already, acne is caused when our sebum produces excessive amounts of oil. EGCG helps in preventing acne as it lowers lipid levels, which in turn, helps reduce sebum excretions from the skin. This reduction decreases or stops acne.
#3 Do you know why acne is common in puberty? It’s because it is influenced a lot by the disrupted hormones. This is the reason why anti-androgen medications or birth control pills are prescribed in order to control acne. Green tea contains EGCG, which also helps in reducing acne caused by hormonal imbalance, by blocking IGF-1. IGF-1, which is the reason behind hormonal acne.
#4. As we know, green tea is an antioxidant which means it protects your skin and body from damage by ‘free radicals’. These free radicals are also known as oxidant radicals, which can cause harm to your skin but are disabled by antioxidants. These may also be a cause for acne, and so by disabling them, green tea helps prevent acne.
#5 Another quality of green tea is that it has antibacterial properties as well. It can easily fight against common bacteria which also contributes towards acne and breakouts. If we get a bit specific, Propionibacterium is what needs to be tackled in order to prevent acne. So, it makes sense that these antibacterial properties of green tea play a considerable role in reducing acne.
Along with helping fight acne, green tea has numerous health benefits as well. It helps in improving your overall health, regulating weight, lowering the risk for heart diseases, cancer, and diabetes, and also helps in increasing brain function. So, you’ll be treating acne while gaining various health benefits as well. However, this doesn’t mean you drink it as much as you can because excess can have side effects. Drink it in moderation, and you’ll gain all these benefits from it.
